Auburn’s Mount Apatite Park offers a different kind of woodland outing: trails through a landscape shaped by old quarries and mineral discoveries.

The city lists the park at 64 Mount Apatite Road, with 325 acres and about four miles of nonmotorized trails. Its exposed rock gives a walk a local history connection that goes beyond the usual leaf-covered path.

Make the first visit a walk and a look. Read the city’s map and mineral-collecting rules before bringing tools; permission to use a park is not permission to dig anywhere. Stay clear of quarry pits and steep edges.

November can leave wet leaves over uneven ground, so choose footwear for roots and rock, allow daylight for the return trip and turn back when conditions call for it. This is not a promise of a level paved route.
