Tonka is a one-year-old, neutered male mixed-breed dog at the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society in Lewiston.

The shelter describes a shepherd-type youngster with enthusiasm, energy and plenty still to learn.

He arrived as a stray, so his earlier experience with children, dogs and cats is unknown.

What he needs now is patient guidance and a household ready to make learning part of daily life.

Consistent, reward-based training, enrichment toys and suitable activities can give his busy mind and body useful outlets.

Meet-and-greets with children and resident dogs are required to assess whether his energy is a good match.

If cats live in the home, discuss introductions and management with the adoption team.

Tonka is listed as available, but adoption status can change.

His identification number is 61924659.

Visit GAHS at 55 Strawberry Avenue, Lewiston, or call 207-783-2311 about meeting him.

The shelter is closed Wednesdays and Sundays.

A good introduction gives Tonka—and his future family—room to begin well.
